Pip Hartle is a British maker of hand thrown stoneware. She is based in London and works from her studio at the bottom of her garden. Her work is heavily influenced by textiles and landscapes from around the world. Originally studying Geography at Sheffield and then Textiles at Goldsmiths, she studied pottery at Morley College in her thirties. After Morley, Pip continued to take classes. She attended the open-access studio Turning Earth, where she progressed from member to studio manager. From there she went to The Kiln Rooms in Peckham. “I love shared studios”, she says, “the mixing of all walks of life and the swapping of skills and advice.” She holds regular open days at her studio, and runs classes for children who might not otherwise have access to pottery.
Her work is influenced largely by textile design and the shapes and colour palettes of ancient pottery. Each of her pieces is unique, designed with function and the everyday at its heart, featuring her signature loose, watery brush marks.
Pip enjoys all aspects of working with clay; from the physicality of preparing it, the rhythm of throwing on the wheel, the decoration – she feels the magic of transforming never diminishes.
