New Light
February 2024

Quiet times in January allow for reflection, rethinking and, in our case, a re-engagement to work with creatives on ideas and projects. So we’ve made an open space by decluttering, installing a magnetic wall, a 3D space and an
area for small events and gatherings. More of this in our next Journal piece.

Our new magnetic wall has been taken up by Esmé Clutterbuck’s poetic mixed-media works on paper, in a show entitled New Light.

Esmé studied Fine Art at The Royal Academy Schools and Central St. Martins and has a studio in Bristol. She works with drawing, photography and print. Her recent exhibitions include the RA Summer Exhibition and this year’s RWA Photo Open.

These, her most recent drawings, are made with Bideford Black and other earth pigments sourced in North Devon. Initially they were planned as a series of 100 small drawings, as she says, “Working rapidly, in fairly quick succession, allowed me the freedom to follow an initial impulse wherever it went.”

These drawings evoke the scientific—cell formations, planets, solar systems, the cycles of life and the female body, generation and growth.

All original artworks shown are available online here. More works on paper will be shown in her evolving exhibition, which continues until the end of March.

Her new work can be seen both framed and unframed in the gallery following the exhibition.
