The Shape of Things
Mary Claire Smith & Guy Rutter

Our new show, The Shape of Things, brings together the work of Guy Rutter and Mary Claire Smith, a dialogue between two artists who - although different in their approach - share a distinct response to colour. Both artists work across print and painting, and this show encompasses both disciplines.

Shadowlands, Mary Claire Smith                                                                                  Yellow Grid, Guy Rutter

Piet’s Field, pastel, coloured pencil, monoprint on Kitakata washi

Working across woodcut, screen print and monotype, Mary Claire Smith's practice explores our relationship with the natural world—responding to landscape, atmosphere and the quiet rhythms found in nature. Through layered marks, textures and hand-worked surfaces, her prints and paintings evoke a deep sense of place and contemplation.

Mary Claire has been selected for the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for the last three years. She has been selected for open call shows at the Lido Stores, Margate and Linden Hall Gallery, Deal. Her work is shown by Irving Gallery, Oxford; Columbia Road Gallery, London; Kobi and Teal, Frome and Frank, Whitstable.

Hanging Forms, screenprint & Sennen, risograph print

Guy Rutter makes abstract geometric paintings and prints, often initiated by a chance glimpse of colour or shape during his daily activities. Recently he has been producing a series of paintings and prints Sennen, a series named after Sennen Cove in Cornwall and reflecting the vibrancy of the colours there in summer. The underlying stripes of colour speak to the towels and swimming costumes of the beachgoers, the kaleidoscope of sand and sky.

In his practice Guy is investigating and creating a visual vocabulary based on the placement of iconic geometry within formal compositions. The colour palette seeks to create a dynamic energy and changing mood within these compositions.

He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show, 2024 & 2025; the London Original Print Flair with Brook Street Gallery; 57w57 Gallery, New York, Lido Gallery, Margate and Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall.

The show continues until 5th September. All works are for sale.

Our opening hours are Monday through to Saturday 10.30–17.00; Sunday 11.00–17.00. Closed Tuesdays.
