Guy Rutter

After studying Fine Art at Medway College of Art and then at Falmouth College of Art, Guy went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a Diploma in Scene Painting.
Since then he has worked as a scene painter for theatre, film and TV, including work for Dennis Potter, Mike Leigh and most recently working on Slow Horses series for Apple TV.

Guy has always maintained his own studio practice alongside this work and in the last five years his own painting and printmaking has taken precedence. Since then he has shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2024) and most recently at London Original Print Fair with Brook Street Gallery, and also several smaller shows including the Lido Stores in Margate and at Frank in Whitstable. His work is in many private collections and has been shown internationally including in Dubai.

Guy makes abstract geometric paintings and prints, often initiated by a chance glimpse of colour or shape during daily activities. Recently he has been producing a series of paintings and prints ‘Sennen’ a series named after the beach in Cornwall and reflecting the vibrancy of the colours there in summer. The underlying stripes of colour speak to the dress, towels and swimming costumes of the beachgoers, as well as the kaleidoscope of sand and sky.

As a member of Porthmeor Printmaking Workshop, he has been developing a series of monoprints which were exhibited at Frank in 2024. Guy will be showing his prints at Newlyn Art Gallery where he has been accepted as part of their programme for September/October 2025.

The works currently featured on our website are paintings and monoprints from the Lempa series, and were produced as a result of a months residency at the Cyprus College of Art. Working from studies made during the residency, these works were completed back in the artist’s studio, using a limited range of colours – sunny yellows, oranges and olive greens – all inspired by the incredible Cypriot light.
