Gary Thorne
Gary Thorne trained in Fine Art at Byam Shaw prior to specialising with Motley Theatre Design, both in London, before developing a designing career in Canada and the UK. He established and ran the postgraduate theatre design course at RADA for 13 years, prior to becoming Course Leader in Design for Theatre and Screen at UCA Rochester for 5 years.
Gary now finds himself very much enjoying the studio life of drawing, painting and craft in a refreshing period of rewiring. Gary lives in Faversham, and loves sea swimming off the Kent coast at Tankerton.
For his trivets and mats Gary uses Manilla hemp rope from Chatham Dockyard in Kent. The three designs are based on a sailor’s ‘Thumper’, the term for a weave of rope that would be used to protect the cabin wall from the door slamming against it in a gust of wind.
A larger, circular, woven mat is available in store, enquiries welcome.
